Mackenzie Hughes made two of his first three cuts at the Honda Classic, but 2020’s result still was a bit of a surprise.

The Canadian was already a PGA Tour winner from his 2016 victory as a rookie at the RSM Classic. He had kind of flown under the radar since then until jumping up to take solo second place at the 2020 Honda.

Hughes opened in 71-72 before posting a scintillating 66-66 on the weekend to finish one shot back of Sungjae Im.

A birdie on the par-5 18th on Sunday could have gotten Hughes in a playoff.

“I knew that this golf course would be a great fit for just the grind — make a bunch of pars, throw in the odd birdie, and I’ve always loved coming to this place,” Hughes was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2020. “It tests every part of your game, and it’s mostly just mental.”

Hughes wasn’t himself off the tee but showed incredible iron play to finish T-18th in the field (1.1) in strokes gained approach and was first in SG around the green (1.6).

The 30 year old enters this week with three made cuts in his last five events. Hughes played great in the fall to open the 2020-2021 PGA Tour season with solo third at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship and T-7th at the Houston Open.

For the season, Hughes ranks 14th in SG putting (.722).
