2021 Honda Classic: Top 10 power rankings at PGA National
Talor Gooch is among the top names in line to claim their first PGA Tour win soon. The former collegiate star at Oklahoma State is coming into his own in his third season in 2020-21.
Gooch is already up to three top-fives coming at the CJ Cup (5th), Houston Open (4th) and last week at the Players Championship (T-5th). He fired 71-68-71-67 to post a good clubhouse lead for a while on Sunday.
The 29 year old could have afforded to hit more fairways last week, but he was tidy in all other phases.
Gooch was fourth in strokes gained approach (1.69 per round), eighth in SG around the green (.903) and 14th in SG putting (1.01). All in all, it resulted in his second best career finish based on the Official World Golf Rankings.
For the season, he’s above average in all SG stats.
Gooch is making his fourth Honda Classic appearance. He missed the cut in his first visit to PGA National in 2018 but was T-20th (71-68-72-68) in 2019 and T-38th (71-69-75-69) in 2020.
Scoring is usually difficult at the Honda, so being able to get up and down is essential. Gooch is ninth in scrambling (66.79%) and is 12th from 10-20 yards (76.27%).
In the last two years, he’s made five of six cuts in Florida.
The Oklahoman is inching ever close to the coveted top 50 in the world. Gooch has won at every level up until the PGA Tour and should soon check that off the resume.
