2021 WGC-Match Play: Top 10 power rankings at Austin CC
The 2017 WGC-Match Play Champion seems to have earned himself a favorable group draw. Kevin Na is coming off a WD out of frustration, or injury, as he cites it, after getting flummoxed by the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass in round one of the Players Championship.
Na did start the year at the Sony Open with a win, but he hasn’t finished in the top 10 since. Robert MacIntyre has never played this event and has not done well in four career pro appearances in the U.S.
Adam Long is also making his tournament debut and has missed five of his last six cuts.
DJ may not play the 18th hole in the group stage.
Unfortunately, I think his run will end quickly with an upset at the hands of the group 16 winner, Sungjae Im.
Johnson was not a good match-play player early in his career. He lost in the first round his first three appearances beginning in 2009 and five of the first six. He figured things out for a brief period with a run to the quarterfinals in 2016 and the win in 2017.
DJ hasn’t made the bracket stage the last two years.
The South Carolinian won earlier this year at the European Tour’s Saudi International and was T-8th at the Genesis Invitational. He looked less inspired of late in Florida with two finished outside the top 40.
I think he’ll be more focused on defending his green jacket in a couple of weeks than adding to his WGC trophy case.
