The Mid-Tier at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play

Group 8

World number Eight Tyrrell Hatton +3500 leads group Eight this week in a group being labeled the “All Euro” group. Hatton is joined by fellow Englishmen Lee Westwood +6000 and Matt Wallace +12500, while Sergio Garcia +4500 makes up the fourth member of this competitive group.

Tyrrell had been on a run of decent form until his recent missed cut at THE PLAYERS, the MC was his first since the Masters last year. Hatton has a solid overall Match Play record of 9-6-1 with five of those nine wins coming at this event.

Group 9

Webb Simpson +3500 will be looking to improve upon his abysmal Match Play record at Austin Country Club where he has won just once in nine matches. All of Paul Casey +2600, Makenzie Hughes +17500, and Talor Gooch +12500 make up the rest of group nine.

Simpson, who has historically performed well on Pete Dye courses will face a stiff challenge for group supremacy from Paul Casey this week who is an excellent Match Play competitor.

Group 14

Daniel Berger +3500 leads another group that appears to be wide open with both questions surrounding the American’s health after his withdrawal prior to last week’s Honda Classic. Berger is joined in group fourteen this week by Harris English +9000 who comes in with his own health concerns following a WD at The PLAYERS, and both Brendon Todd +12500 and Erik Van Rooyen +17500.

Berger’s record at this event of 1-8 combined with his health does little to inspire any confidence in him this week turning his poor run of form here around. English, Todd, and Van Rooyen will all be making their WGC Dell Technologies Match Play debuts this week.

Group 15

Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick +3500 leads a group that also includes Texas native Jordan Spieth +2600 in what looks to be a competitive group this week. Both Matthew Wolff +12500 and Corey Conners +5500 complete the foursome in group fifteen.

Fitzpatrick has a sub-par Match Play record of 8-11-1 and is just 3-9 in matches at Austin Country Club.

Several of the big names this week look to have favorable paths to the Championship match, but who amongst the pack has the best shot of making a cinderella run this week?.
