2021 Texas Open: Top 10 power rankings at TPC San Antonio
Barring a catastrophe here at the Texas Open, Jordan Spieth has worked his way to become one of the top favorites at the Masters next week.
The three-time major champion has revived himself in 2021. Spieth has three top-four finishes in as many months to go with a T-15th.
The Dallas native showed good flashes last week at the WGC-Match Play where he advanced to the round of 16. Spieth tied Matthew Wolff and beat Matthew Fitzpatrick and Corey Conners to win his group.
Spieth was outlasted 1UP by eventual third-place winner, Matt Kuchar, in the round of 16. What’s with all the Matt/Matthews for Jordan?
The former Texas Longhorn received good fanfare last week in Austin. He should get another warm reception this week in San Antonio.
Spieth is making his sixth Texas Open appearance. The 27 year old has finished T-41st or better in the four cuts he made, highlighted by a solo second place finish in 2015 (71-69-71-70). Spieth lost to fellow Texan, Jimmy Waker, by three, but Spieth was three clear of the rest of the leaders.
“It’s very special. As a native Texan I always like playing the Texas events,” Spieth was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2015. “This event, in particular, gave me an exemption when I was in college. And then when I was on Tour, when I just earned status I was going to receive an exemption, whether or not I did at that point, I think towards kind of the last minute. So it’s a tournament that has helped launch my career and one that is close to my heart. So I like being back here.”
Spieth will have to avoid the big errant tee shot, but just missing the fairway isn’t a huge deterrent here. His iron play (43rd strokes gained approach, 4.04 per round) is close to mid-2010s levels. The short game (28th SG, .319) and putting (65th, .300) have been solid, too.
The ultimate comeback for him would be to win his first event since the 2017 Open Championship at the Masters for his second green jacket. But the hype for Augusta would really pick up if he proves he can win leading in.
