2021 Texas Open: Top 10 power rankings at TPC San Antonio
Scottie Scheffler continues to knock on the door of his first PGA Tour win. It’s not to the point where the 24-year-old Texan should feel any sort of weight on his shoulders, but he’s got to feel due.
The Dallas native nearly triumphed in Austin last week where he made it to the championship at the WGC-Match Play.
He fell to Billy Horschel 2&1 on Sunday.
Scheffler went 1-0-2 in the group stage and had to beat group favorite and tournament No. 5 seed, Xander Schauffele, in a sudden-death playoff to advance. Scheffler took care of business and proceeded to polish off Ian Poulter, Jon Rahm and Matt Kuchar before reaching Horschel.
“I think one of my biggest takeaways is most of the week I performed when I needed to,” Scheffler was transcribed by ASAP Sports. “Obviously this last match I didn’t perform there towards the end. But up until that point when I really needed to make a putt or hit a really nice shot I did that. So a lot of confidence going forward performing under pressure and especially match play, just the guys I had to go through this week, a lot of talent out here and to make it to the finals there is definitely some confidence going forward.”
Save for a missed cut at the Players Championship, the reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year has been in great form. Scheffler finished T-7th, T-20th and T-5th in his three starts prior to TPC Sawgrass. One was at a WGC where he was fifth at The Concession.
The former Texas Longhorn standout is making his second Texas Open appearance. He fired 71-68-70-70 for T-20th playing on a sponsor’s exemption. Scheffler made double bogeys or worse and hit 72.22% of greens in regulation. It was a sign of things to come that year on the way to Korn Ferry Tour Rookie of the Year honors.
Scheffler is starting to get some Ryder Cup buzz, and rightfully so. It’s make things a lot easier for captain Stricker if his young gun had at least one win under his belt.
This is a great spot to do it.
