2021 Texas Open: Top 10 power rankings at TPC San Antonio
Corey Conners did not advance past the group stage of the WGC-Match Play last week. Don’t let that distract you from the fact that the Canadian is playing great stroke play golf in recent weeks.
He’s already got eight top-25s in the 2020-21 season, including three out of four before the Match Play. Conners was in the top-10 against stronger fields than he’ll see this week, earning solo third at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and solo seventh at the Players Championship.
Now, he finally gets to defend his Texas Open title two years later. The former Kent State Golden Flash fired 69-67-66-66 to beat the all-time horse for course at TPC San Antonio, Charley Hoffman, by two.
He finished in style with a closing 6-under 30 on the back nine.
Conners’ 20-under total was the lowest winning score recorded at the Oaks course and the best in the tournament since Tommy Armour III went 26 deep in 2003.
He led the field in strokes gained approach (11.558 total), birdies (29) and was fifth in SG off the tee (4.327 total).
For this season, he’s 14th in SG off the tee (.548 per round) and 12th in SG approach (.698 per round)
It stands as Conners’ only win, but it was an impressive one. Conners was Mr. Monday Qualifier for a while starting out as a pro, balancing the Korn Ferry Tour and other lower tours with spot starts on the PGA Tour.
Conners also appeared at the 2018 Texas Open where he finished T-26th.
