The champions dinner at the Masters is one of the many great traditions at Augusta National. Each year, the previous year’s winner determines the menu for the dinner, which is held prior to the beginning of the event. That means Dustin Johnson got to pick the menu for next week’s meal.

I’ll be honest, when I first saw the menu for this year’s event, I thought it might be an April Fool’s joke. Generally, the menu is very formal and exquisite with some items that I can’t pronounce, can’t afford or generally don’t know what they are. That’s not the case with DJ’s choices.

If you haven’t seen the menu, it’s very simple, kind of like Johnson himself. The appetizers are pigs in a blanket (no kidding) as well as lobster and corn fritters.

The first course is very basic. It’s a house salad or Caesar salad.

The main course is filet mignon and miso-marinated sea bass. Those are accompanied by family style sides of mashed potatoes and spring vegetables.

For dessert? How about peach cobbler and apple pie with vanilla ice cream.

To compare menus, Tiger Woods got to choose the fare last year. His starter was The Augusta Roll, a sushi dish with tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, avocado, eel sauce, tempura flakes, pickled ginger, wasabi and soy sauce.

Tiger’s main course last year was prime steak and chicken fajitas with grilled vegetables, refried beans, Mexican rice, pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole and flour tortillas. The dessert trio included classic flan, churros with chocolate sauce and sopapillas.

Tiger also had a couple of wine choices to go with his meal. There were no indications of any wines to be served with DJ’s meal.

Again, Johnson is a simple man and he has chosen a simple meal for his champion’s dinner. Frankly, it sounds like a really good meal to me!
