Abraham Ancer went from missing the cut in 2019 to nearly winning the whole thing in 2020 at the RBC Heritage. He put on a ball striking clinic, hitting 65 of 72 greens in regulation for the week and all 18 on Sunday. The 65 was the most GIR at that event since 1980.

Scores of 69-64-65-65 (-21) would have set the tournament scoring record if not for Webb Simpson doing one better.

Ancer made just two bogeys and nothing worse all week. The former Oklahoma Sooner was tops in the field in strokes gained approach (11.824 total) and seventh in SG off the tee (3.307 total).

Ancer was tantalizingly close to his first PGA Tour win, which he’s still seeking. Coming back to a comfortable venue like Harbour Town is a good place to try to end the drought.

“…you have to be good off the tee and some good shots from the fairway,” Ancer was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2020. “You have to be really precise. I enjoy that kind of golf.“

The 30-year-old Mexican-American comes to Hilton Head with five straight top-30s in tow. Ancer posted T-26th last week at the Masters despite a two-stroke penalty suffered Saturday for grazing some sand before a bunker shot that took slow-mo replay to assess. Get those two shots back and he’s looking at T-18th instead.

Nonetheless, he’s a resilient player who will look to put that in the rearview at a better venue for him to contend like Harbour Town.

He’s second on the PGA Tour in greens in regulation (72.8%) so another big ball striking week is quite possible.
