Collin Morikawa’s RBC Heritage debut in 2020 wasn’t one for the highlight reel. He opened with 68-69-68 before running out of gas Sunday falling to T-64th a week after contending at Colonial.

Less than a year later and Morikawa added three wins to his three career total, one famously being the 2020 PGA Championship that he’ll defend next month.

Talking more recently, Morikawa is coming off another solid showing at a major. One of the best rounds of the day Friday at Augusta National gave him an outside shot at vaulting into contention, but the Masters sophomore settled for T-18th.

That makes four top-20s in eight starts in 2021, including his trophy at the WGC-Workday Championship. Between last year’s PGA at TPC Harding Park and the WGC that will move back to Mexico, the poor guy will have to keep defending titles at different courses!

That won’t be the case if he can find a way to don the tartan jacket here at Harbour Town.

His precise iron play would seem to be a good fit attacking Pete Dye’s devilishly small greens.

Morikawa ranks first on the PGA Tour in strokes gained approach (1.238). Not to mention the inconsistent putter should feel relieved to get a break from the green complexes at ANGC.

Morikawa is fourth in birdie average (4.68).

The 24-year-old Californian took two of three weeks off prior to the Masters. I like him to have gas in the tank after a major to post a high finish.
