2021 Zurich Classic: Dark Horses
Before I jump into this week’s 2021 Zurich Classic, I wanted to do a quick recap for the RBC Heritage. We saw a huge dark horse come out on top, Stewart Cink. Three of my dark horses were Michael Thompson, Adam Hadwin, and Ben Martin. Hadwin and Martin missed the cut. Hadwin had a BAD Thursday and almost came back to make the cut Friday. Thompson was getting hot, but fell off and ended at -5/T42 for the RBC Heritage.
This week, the PGA Tour is heading to TPC Louisiana in New Orleans, LA for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. This week is a partner tournament, which makes things a little different for DFS. You can only select one player from each team. In the end, it is a team event so it will not make a difference who you pick, they cost the same and end with the same score.
This week I will be providing three dark horses, meaning teams that are longshots, but could play really well for their salary. These dark horses are duos that are $7,500 and below. Also I only use DraftKings, so these prices will be for their website, but the players can be used on FanDuel as well.
Dark Horse Duo Number 1
Sam Ryder & Doc Redman ($7,000)
Redman is off his game, Ryder seems to kind of be on. Ryder has missed two cuts in his past five starts on tour, but also has a 2nd, 8th, and 39th mixed in there. Redman has never played here, but Ryder has. His last Zurich Classic, he missed the cut with J.J. Spaun. He has a lot better partner this time around, and this is why they are my first dark horses this week.
Dark Horse Duo Number 2
Akshay Bhatia & Scott Piercy ($6,900)
These two are my next set of dark horses because it includes a past champion here, Scott Piercy (2018 w/ Billy Horschel). Akshay is new to the tour, but neither of these two are playing great right now. I think Akshay is slowly on the rise and will eventually be a top name on tour in the coming years, as most seem to think that too. I would have expected him to go out there with another young guy, but Piercy has won, so maybe he shows him the ins and outs of how to win at the Zurich. Worth a spot in at least a few lineups for a possible low risk, high reward situation.
Dark Horse Duo Number 3
Jhonattan Vegas & Andres Romero ($6,400)
These two will be my last dark horses because Romero won here in 2008. Yes that was over a decade ago, but they are only $6,400. Vegas has been playing pretty well with a 2nd, 18th, and 30th in his last five starts. There is not a whole ton to say about Romero besides his last outing was a 30th on the tour. A huge dart, but high possible reward too and a sneaky play in my opinion.
