Tyrrell Hatton had a fairly successful week at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans playing with fellow Englishman Danny Willett. The duo posted 65-73-65-69 to tie for eighth out of 33 teams to make the cut and 80 overall.

While Hatton/Willett never really contended on Sunday, it was still a nice result.

Now, he’s back to playing his own ball. That’s gone fairly well for him, but you know a heated competitor would like to be in contention more often.

Since winning the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship early in the year on the European, Hatton’s still seeking another top five. But, I’m here to tell you he’s not far off.

The 29-year-old has made six of seven cuts since then if you count the Zurich. In that span, he broke a streak of three missed cuts at the majors by posting T-18th at the Masters. Hatton also tacked on top-25s against top-end fields at the WGC-Workday Championship (T-22nd) and at his title defense at the Arnold Palmer Invitational (T-21st).

He ranks sixth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained approach (.905). If Hatton plays sensibly this week and finds a lot of fairways, look out. He’s 11th in proximity from the short grass (30’1”). Hatton is also 12th in sand saves (61.22%).

It was a tale of two rounds at his lone Valspar Championship start in 2019. Hatton opened in 69 to sit just three off the lead. Then an 81 happened.

Innisbrook appears to be a good course fit for Hatton, so another round in the 80s seems unlikely.
