2021 Wells Fargo Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Quail Hollow
Viktor Hovland is the only player in my top 10 this week who hasn’t teed it up at Quail Hollow.
That’s OK when you consider the damage the youngster is done in this situation elsewhere. He can learn a new course just fine.
That’s what Hovland did last week at the Valspar Championship. The debutant fired four rounds in the 60s on the Copperhead course to finish T-3rd.
Confidence continues to build after his seventh worldwide top-10 since winning the Mayakoba Golf Classic in December.
“Obviously the win at Mayakoba was a lot of fun,” Hovland was transcribed by ASAP Sports, “but I think — I shouldn’t say I prided myself more, but it’s nice to see that validation with the other tournaments as well, the couple of runner-ups and other top-5s and just kind of making sure that I’m playing good golf week in, week out, because that’s, I feel like that’s a lot more fun than — obviously getting another win would be very fun — but just being consistent week in, week out is, yeah, I take a lot of satisfaction from that.”
The former Oklahoma State Cowboy ranks fourth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee (.812). Hovland is a near equal mix of accurate (61st, 63.9%) and long (300.6) with the driver.
The 23-year-old also can go low sitting fifth in birdie average (4.54). He’s not particularly tidy on and around the greens but at least is 18th in sand saves (59.46%).
Hovland and Kristoffer Ventura teamed up a couple weeks ago at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and were in contention for the first few days.
That and his chance at the Valspar will fuel him to get in contention once more in Charlotte.
