2021 Wells Fargo Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Quail Hollow
It’s been a little quiet on the Bryson front lately. A little too quiet.
The Big Golfer sputtered to a couple top-50s his last two times out and has since taken three weeks off. A little time in the gym and home swing studio should do DeChambeau well.
Prior to poor results at the WGC-Match Play and Masters, he made plenty of waves with a win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T-3rd at the Players Championship.
Those Florida courses suited his style better and Quail Hollow should be another good fit.
DeChambeau missed the cut in his Wells Fargo Championship debut in 2016. Since then at Quail Hollow, he earned T-33rd (73-71-72-71) at the 2017 PGA Championship and solo fourth (75-65-66-70) in 2018.
The SMU product is on site for the first time since his weight gain/push for more club speed. It’s paid off to the tune of first on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee (1.144), first in SG tee to green (2.099) and first in driving distance (321.1).
There are only three par-5 opportunities per day at Quail Hollow, but DeChambeau should still have some eagle tries as he’s second on the PGA Tour making one every 55.6 holes.
The 27-year-old is also 13th in SG approach (.696), 37th in SG around the green (.259) and 38th in SG putting (.435). From round to round we see plenty of volatility in DeChambeau’s aggressive style. At the end of the day, though, his stats level out very well and he’s more well-rounded than some give him credit for.
His bruising style fits well this week. Expect DeChambeau to begin another hot streak leading into the remaining three majors.
