2021 Wells Fargo Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Quail Hollow
With a world ranking safely in the top 50, entry into all the upcoming major championships, and special temporary membership to be able to accept unlimited sponsor’s exemptions, life’s a lot easier for Will Zalatoris these days.
Shamefully, the PGA Tour hasn’t upgraded him to full status from the Korn Ferry Tour, but he can at least be a little more choosy with his schedule until that full status arrives either when he wins on the PGA Tour or when his PGA Tour card is set to begin when the 2021-22 season starts in the fall.
It’s very possible he could just go ahead and win outright to solve his problem. If not for a remarkable performance by Hideki Matsuyama, we could be talking about Zalatoris’ first win coming at the Masters.
The consistency out of the 24-year-old is phenomenal. He enters the Wells Fargo Championship on a streak of 11 straight made cuts, all on the PGA Tour. In there are four top-10s and two outside the top 50.
Most of this success is at courses he’s seeing for the first time, at least at this level. That’s the case this week for his Quail Hollow debut.
He will have some home cooking from the 30% capacity allowed on the grounds. Some of the galleriy will be pulling for the former Wake Forest Demon Deacon who played collegiately just 80 miles up the road in Winston Salem.
Zalatoris ranks seventh on the PGA Tour in strokes gained tee to green (1.317). That’s largely due to his approach where he’s fifth in SG (.942). The guy is shaped like a beanpole but he generates the ball speed to sit 20th on the PGA Tour in driving distance (307.6).
Zalatoris just got engaged last week, so a little extra money in the pocket to spend on the wedding might not hurt the guy. I predict another top-10 will do that.
