Every week on the PGA Tour, there are players who fare better than expected and those who fall short of what was expected of them. Here at Pro Golf Now, we call them winners and losers. Here are the winners and losers from this week’s Wells Fargo Championship.

Winners

Rory McIlroy – It had been more than 18 months, but McIlroy finally won on the PGA Tour again. It was his 19th career win on tour. He has proven that he loves Quail Hollow, as this was his third win on this course.

Viktor Hovland – All this dude does is give himself a chance to win. After a T3 last week at the Valspar, Hovland finished T3 this week. That’s six top-five finishes so far this season for the talented youngster.

Abraham Ancer – Like Hovland, this is the second straight top-five showing for Ancer after he was solo fifth at the Valspar last week and solo second this week. He now has four top-five finishes this season and has moved into the Top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings.

Keith Mitchell – He held the 54-hole lead and played with Rory McIlroy on Sunday, more than holding his own against one of the best in the game. A third-place finish may be a bit of a disappointment but a 43-point jump in the FedEx Cup standings made this week a success.

Bryson DeChambeau – After thinking he had missed the cut on Friday, DeChambeau actually left Charlotte and went to Dallas. But he found out he made the cut and hurried back. Eventually, he would finish in a tie for ninth after a pair of 68s on the weekend.

Losers

Phil Mickelson – Lefty opened this event with a 7-under par 64, taking the lead after 18 holes. From there, he was, frankly, not good. He shot 75 on Friday and a pair of 76s on the weekend. He finished 7-over par for the event.

Patrick Cantlay – After starting the season red hot, Cantlay is slumping as of late. He missed the cut this week, marking his third MC in his last four events and four in his last six. Not what should be expected of one of the world’s Top 10 players.

Jon Rahm – He had made the cut in 22 straight events before this week, but Rahm could not make it 23. He shot 76 on Thursday and 70 on Friday to see that streak, which was the longest on tour, come to an end in Charlotte.

Max Homa – He was the defending champion at Quail Hollow, but Homa struggled this week. He opened with a 77 and followed that with a 76 to miss the cut by nine shots.

Harold Varner III – At the beginning of the week, Varner talked about how important this event is to him. Then, he shot 72-73 to miss the cut by a shot. Tough week for a guy who was hoping to do something special in Charlotte.
