It was certainly of the backdoor variety, no doubt. What Collin Morikawa’s T-8th at the PGA Championship showed was that even without his best stuff he can still beat most of the field.

Morikawa closed in 68 on Sunday to defend his 2020 PGA Championship win admirably. It was his fourth made cut in five major championship starts and third top-20.

Morikawa remarkably had no double bogeys or worse at Kiawah Island. He was third in strokes gained off the tee (4.158 total) and eighth in SG approach (7.717).

Now, the 24-year-old heads to the site of another top-10. Morikawa was the man to beat last year in his Charles Schwab Challenge debut, but the putter let him down on short putts on No. 18 in regulation and in a playoff he lost to Daniel Berger.

“I thought the course fit me really well,” ASAP Sports quoted Morikawa in 2020. “It’s a ball striker’s course, had to hit it in the fairway, and it was crazy because it just didn’t seem like I was hitting as many fairways as I normally do… But overall I think it fits my game really well. You’ve got to put it in the fairway, and from there it’s an approach shot course.”

Morikawa is already a four-time PGA Tour winner. He won in 2021 at the WGC-Workday Championship. The former Cal Golden Bear owns five top-10s this year and has made eight cuts in a row worldwide going back to October.

Morikawa’s game is a great fit for Colonial. He’s sixth on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy (70.83%) and first in SG approach (1.373). Smaller greens also mean shorter putts for a player whose flat stick is the weak club in the bag.
