2021 Charles Schwab Challenge: Top 10 power rankings at Colonial CC
Patrick Reed grew up in San Antonio, so he gets to head four hours north from his hometown to tee it up at Colonial.
He’s 4-for-4 in cuts made at the Charles Schwab Challenge and continues to improve. Reed debuted in 2013 with T-46th (70-69-67-73), was T-33rd (70-69-68-69) in 2015, T-15th (65-69-69-71) in 2016 and T-7th (68-69-63-67) last year. He was just two shots from a playoff in 2020.
“I wouldn’t say the rough is really thick,” Reed was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2016. “It’s that kind of rough that if the ball sits down you’re hacking. But 90 percent of the time you’re trying to figure out is it going to fly, is it not going to fly. It’s crucial here to hit fairways,”
Reed comes to the Lone Star state with five top-30s in his last six starts.
He made the cut on the number at the PGA Championship before firing 69-70 on the weekend to surge up to T-17th. He was T-6th his previous start at Quail Hollow and won early in the year at Torrey Pines.
Given Colonial’s small greens, a good short game is helpful. The 30-year-old ranks 21st on the PGA Tour in strokes gained around the green (.328) and second in SG putting (.993). He’s also eighth in sand saves (62.5%).
Reed has enough length to contend at any course on the schedule, but a shorter course would seem to play into his hands.
