Collin Morikawa had a thrilling win over Justin Thomas in a playoff at the 2020 Workday Championship. The next man out was Viktor Hovland, who was four shots adrift in solo third place. Rounds of 69-67-66-71 were impressive for his Muirfield Village debut, even if it wasn’t the same tough test as usual .

In his sixth tournament in a row at the time, Hovland ran out of gas to settle for T-48th (74-68-77-79) at the Memorial Tournament the next week.

Young Hov has been consistent since day one on the PGA Tour in 2019. He has fewer missed cuts (one) than wins (two) since March 2020.

The Norwegian picked up T-3rd finishes recently at the Valspar Championship and the Wells Fargo Championship to go with T-2nd early in 2021 at the WGC-Workday Championship.

Hovland comes to Muirfield Village rested, unlike last year. He took a week off following his T-30th at the PGA Championship.

The former Oklahoma State Cowboy sits fifth on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (1.679) and is in positive numbers in each individual category. That includes ninth in SG tee to green (1.385) for a guy who always seems to find the center of the club face.

Hovland is not scary long, but he hits it far enough to win here in Dublin or anywhere. The 23-year-old is fourth in SG off the tee (.722).

He’s second in birdie average (4.59) and first in scoring average (69.783), making him a darling for daily fantasy lineups.
