2021 Memorial Tournament: Top 10 power rankings at Muirfield Village
While futuristic in his approach to improving his game, Bryson DeChambeau still fancies himself a golf historian.
I wish Ben Hogan was still around to watch the Big Golfer play. He at least may appreciate DeChambeau’s nod to his fellow Texan with the Hogan-style hat.
DeChambeau makes it a point to frequently play at a living legend’s event, the Memorial Tournament. He got to shake the Golden Bear’s hand when he won in 2018.
It was DeChambeau’s second career PGA Tour win and one that kickstarted his upward climb. The former SMU Mustang reeled off three more wins that year and is up to eight for the career to go with a European Tour win.
DeChambeau fired 69-67-66-71 in 2018 to get into a playoff where he beat Byeong Hun An and Kyle Stanley.
He finished in the top 40 in two cuts made in three other starts at Muirfield Village.
Bryson comes to Ohio off of a much-needed weak of rest. He played three weeks in a row prior, beginning with the flight debacle at Quail Hollow. He valiantly went from seemingly missing the cut to T-9th, but that may have emptied his reserves.
DeChambeau limped to T-55th in the Metroplex at the Byron Nelson and was a non-factor at Kiawah Island to take T-38th.
He plays a volatile style of golf and is always tinkering. The consistency isn’t quite there, but obviously his upside is as high as anybody’s when he’s on point.
This week’s venue sets up fairly well for him in that the fairways are fairly wide. You just can’t get away with the mega misses he can sometimes have.
DeChambeau’s length brings all four par-5s into play for him, and his putter has behaved for the most part in 2020-21 at 47th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained (.344)
He’s first in SG off the tee (1.145) and second in SG tee to green (1.761).
