2021 Palmetto Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Congaree
Tommy Fleetwood has been somewhat of a forgotten man in 2021. He was a superstar in the game for nearly five years, but the magic has worn off a bit of late for the long-locked golfer.
Fleetwood still seeks his first win on American soil. This is a great place to nab it. When playing on the PGA Tour, it’s often in WGCs or majors. He’ll rarely see a weaker field than here at the Palmetto Championship.
It’s time for the Englishman to assert himself going into Torrey Pines, where it’s feasible to see him do well if his ball striking is in form.
Fleetwood’s short game has looked as solid as ever. He’s fourth in strokes gained around the green (.593).
He’s struggled on approach out of the rough, so all short grass at Congaree will help the cause.
The 30-year-old should be good and rested. His last start was a missed cut at the PGA Championship three weeks ago. Prior, Fleetwood finished T-14th at the Wells Fargo Championship for his third made cut in four starts. That stretch included a run to the WGC-Match Play quarterfinals.
He’s only missed two cuts worldwide in 2021 and finished top-26 in four straight European Tour events to begin the year.
Fleetwood is a five-time winner on the European Tour. That experience may finally guide him to a win on the PGA Tour. He’s come close with a solo second at the 2017 WGC-Mexico Championship as well as two other third-place results.
