2021 Palmetto Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Congaree
Before Sunday, you had to go back over two years to find the last time Sungjae Im missed consecutive cuts. It was in his rookie season on the PGA Tour in 2019.
Golf’s closest thing to a robot plays a lot of golf, too. Fatigue doesn’t seem to be a thing for the South Korean who is on pace to play 29 or more events worldwide for the fifth straight year.
Through all those events, he finds a way to make the money and churn out respectable finishes. He’s in a bit of a slump, however, after trunk slamming for the second tournament in a row last week at the Memorial Tournament.
Im also missed out at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
It hasn’t been the year the 23-year-old has looked for so far. Im isn’t contending for titles, but there are plenty of glimmers of hope. He owns nine top-30s in 16 events in 2021, including T-17th at the PGA Championship about 80 miles east at Kiawah Island.
Im is an accurate driver (14th, 69.3%) and could benefit from fairway rollout if conditions permit.
Rain could also soften up Congaree and make it a birdie fest. Im is 31st on the PGA Tour in par breakers (23.45%).
He’s 38th in strokes gained putting (.393). Im’s short game needs to be tightened up, but we saw him hang tough at a place where it’s easy to be exposed, Augusta National, en route to T-2nd at the 2020 Masters.
More of that magic, and Im will be right there on Sunday at the Palmetto Championship.
