If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Or, if you’re Viktor Hovland, you only have to try again once.

While putting together an All-American season at Oklahoma State, he earned a sponsor’s exemption into the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open. He missed the cut in what was his second career PGA Tour start.

A lot happened for Hovland since he returned to Torrey Pines in 2021. He won twice on the PGA Tour and has been one of the more consistent players in the world since turning pro in the summer of ‘19.

The Norwegian finished T-2nd (70-65-73-71) at the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open. His 65 in tough, rainy conditions on the South course was mighty impressive.

Hovland is 6-for-6 making the cut in majors. He’s finished between T-12th and T-33rd in each. The T-12th came at the 2019 U.S. Open where he was low amateur at Pebble Beach.

Hovland opted for rest last week after finishing T-47th at the Memorial Tournament. That was his fifth straight made cut in a row in stroke play events, as well as 21st of the last 22 going back to March 2020.

Hovland’s last win was in December at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. He’s got seven top-10s worldwide in 2021, including T-2nd at the WGC-Workday Championship and T-3rds at the Valspar Championship and Wells Fargo Championship.

The 23-year-old ranks fifth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee (.716), sixth in scoring average (69.924) and 10th in par-5 scoring average (4.52).

Hovland is 21st in SG approach (.601) but is much better out of the fairway. He’s fairly accurate with the driver, so if that’s clicking then he ought to be just fine. Hovland’s short game is also quickly improving.
