This is Bryson DeChambeau’s first time getting a crack at Torrey Pines since his bulk-up.

Perhaps all the distance he’s added will help him tame this venue. He missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open in 2017 and 2018.

DeChambeau doesn’t miss many cuts these days. The big golfer has made the weekend in seven straight stroke play events, as well as 11 of the last 12 worldwide.

That span features his win in March at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, as well as his major championship breakthrough last fall.

DeChambeau won a rare September, gallery-free U.S. Open at another big ballpark at Winged Foot. The SMU alum ran away for a six-shot victory over Matthew Wolff and was eight clear of third place. DeChambeau led the field in strokes gained tee to green (4.48) despite hitting less than half his fairways.

The 27-year-old took a week off to rest after taking T-18th at the Memorial Tournament.

DeChambeau struggled in majors early in his career. He’s improved to make his last five cuts, including the win and T-4th at the 2020 PGA Championship.

Surprise, surprise: He’s first on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee (1.109), in driving distance (322.7) and club head speed (132.53). Not to mention, DeChambeau’s also first in holes per eagle (69.2) and third in proximity from 200-plus yards (44’1”).

Bryson may have to throw the blinders on this week to block out the mocking “Brooksie” taunts sure to come his way. If he can block it all out, there’s no reason he can’t copy his pal Brooks and repeat as U.S. Open champ like he did in 2017-18.
