2021 US Open: Top 10 power rankings at Torrey Pines
Torrey Pines is a different animal in June compared to January. Nor will Patrick Reed get to devour the North course like he did with a 64 earlier in the year.
Regardless, Reed’s win in January at the Farmers Insurance Open is indicative that this is a good location for his game. Thick, juicy rough along the fairways and greens allows his shot-making and impeccable short game to shine.
It also may lead to some rules controversies, but I digress. Let’s just hope the rain stays out of the forecast to avoid those dastardly embedded balls.
Reed compiled solid rounds on the South course of 72-70-68 that helped him glide to a five-shot win.
The Texan led the field in strokes gained around the green (.981) and 10th in SG putting (1.13).
For the 2020-21 season, he’s 19th (.378) and fourth (.85) in those stats, respectively.
The result was Reed’s fourth straight top-25 at the Farmers, as well as fifth top-40 in six total starts.
He enters the week coming off a week of rest after taking solo fifth at the Memorial Tournament. That was his third top-10 and fourth top-20 in his last six starts.
Reed has won elsewhere in California at the 2014 Humana Challenge.
The 30-year-old also ranks 44th in proximity from the rough (43’3”).
Reed has made eight straight cuts in majors, which includes seven top-20s.
The main detriment against Reed at Torrey Pines is he’s not a bomber. With that said, the course expects to play firmer this week than in January, which could help him gain some distance on the ground rollout.
