Scottie Scheffler keeps knocking on the door. One of these days, it’s going to open.

The young pro earned his 14th career PGA Tour top-10 last week by finishing T-7th at the U.S. Open. Scheffler played in the third-to-last pairing on Sunday. He didn’t blow up like some guys around him and shot 72, but didn’t have the charge needed to win.

Scheffler opened in 72-69-70 and played steady golf around Torrey Pines throughout the week. He only made one double bogey, which was a 7 on the par-5 13th that proved to be the final nail in the coffin.

Nevertheless, this was his second top-10 and third top-20 in the three majors this year.

Picking up the first PGA Tour win is the next step. It might be what it takes to get Scheffler on the American Ryder Cup team.

Scheffler’s made seven of his last eight cuts, which includes a run to the championship at the WGC-Match Play and third place at the Memorial Tournament.

The 24-year-old ranks 16th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee (.545). He crushes the ball and loves to play aggressively with a birdie average of 4.39 that ranks fourth.

Bomb and gouge was a prevailing recipe at Torrey Pines, but the rough was as high as ever. It’ll be more managable at TPC River Highlands, albeit with more treeline to maneuver through.

Scheffler missed the cut at his Travelers Championship debut in 2020. He struggled out of the gate when golf resumed from the COVID-19 hiatus that June.

The former Texas Longhorn got up to speed in time for T-4th at the 2020 PGA Championship and a successful FedEx Cup Playoffs run. He’s been one of the more consistent players in the world ever since.
