2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Top 10 power rankings at Detroit Golf Club
Bryson DeChambeau didn’t get a glimpse of Detroit Golf Club in 2019, but that didn’t matter when he made his debut a year later.
Even in firm and fast conditions benefitting the shorter hitters, DeChambeau bludgeoned the field at the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic. He fired 66-67-67-65 to win by three over Matthew Wolff, five over third place and seven over fourth place.
“Well, I would say the most important thing is that I played on a golf course that required unbelievable wedging and that’s not one of the strong suits of my game, and I was able to win and win by a few, so that’s really positive,” DeChambeau was quoted by Tee Scripts.
The SMU alum averaged a whopping 350.6 yards in driving distance and was first in the field in strokes gained off the tee (1.67). He was all the way down at 84th in SG approach (-.121), or else it really could’ve been a memorable week.
He’s also first this season in SG off the tee (1.117) and first in holes per eagle (74.6).
DeChambeau’s win was his sixth straight top-10 at the time and was a springboard for his U.S. Open win a couple months later.
The big golfer is teeing it up for the third straight week this week. He led late on Sunday at the U.S. Open before dropping to T-26th. Three rounds in the 60s had him in the top 10 going into the final day at the Travelers Championship before a final-round 70 settled him in a tie for 19th.
This is the week DeChambeau rights his Sunday wrongs and hoists his first trophy since February.
