There aren’t many courses the PGA Tour can go where Phil Mickelson will be a newcomer. Detroit Golf Club is one of them.

Lefty is teeing it up for the first time at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

We’re two weeks away from the Open Championship. Mickelson has played the Scottish Open the week prior in years past, but has shifted toward more often playing a PGA Tour event two weeks before the Open and skipping the Scottish.

That’s likely the reason he’s giving it a go at DGC. Not to mention, he’d like to continue his recent resurgent form.

Phil just turned 51 shortly after his surprise PGA Championship victory. He missed the cut by a shot the week after, but showed character in sticking with his prior commitment to play at Colonial.

After a couple much-deserved weeks off, Mickelson made the cut in his home major at the U.S. Open (T-62nd) and at last week’s Travelers Championship (T-61st).

He logged three rounds in the 60s and made no double bogeys or worse at TPC River Highlands.

Mickelson has played 14 events in 2021 with three top-25s. The Arizona State alum ranks 47th in driving distance (302.6) and can still hang on a soft golf course if he’s firing on all (or at least most) cylinders.

Lefty never won the old Buick Open, so this may be his last chance to win an event in Michigan.

It’s probably a pipe dream for Mickelson to make the American Ryder Cup team, but another win between now and Whistling Straits would spark up plenty of conversation.
