2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Top 10 power rankings at Detroit Golf Club
While not technically a full-status PGA Tour member, Will Zalatoris has still made plenty of starts in the big leagues. It’s been an overwhelming success for the former Korn Ferry Tour star.
Zalatoris owns seven top-10s in the 2020-21 season, three of which came in the majors. They were T-6th at the 2020 U.S. Open, second at the 2021 Masters and T-8th at the 2021 PGA Championship.
All that’s left to do next is win. He needs one in the next month or so to be eligible for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. It could also be what puts him over the top to make the American Ryder Cup team.
It’s possible the Big Z is hitting a bit of a rookie wall. His last two starts were T-58th at the Charles Schwab Challenge and a rare missed cut in his last appearance at the U.S. Open.
That was just his second MC since October.
This recent stretch will likely end up as just a blip on the radar. Zalatoris played tons of golf at the end of 2020 and early 2021, so it was good to see him take two weeks off before the U.S. Open and another one after.
This week seems like a good spot for Zalatoris to pick it back up, and perhaps win against one of the weaker fields he’ll see in the near future.
It’s the Wake Forest alum’s debut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Zalatoris ranks third on the PGA Tour in strokes gained approach (.904) and ninth in SG tee to green (1.372). He’s 24th in distance (306.9) and has the ball flight to contend if Detroit Golf Club is nice and soggy.
The 24-year-old Texan also sits sixth on Tour in holes per eagle (95.1).
