2021 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship Recap: Nelly Korda dominates
Korda’s Dominant Week at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship
It would’ve been easy to say that after her win at the Meijer LPGA Classic that Nelly Korda probably wouldn’t win back-to-back events at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. After all, it isn’t easy to string together consecutive wins on tour. After her first round score of 70, it looked like she might be able to contend, but it wouldn’t be easy.
Then, Friday rolled around, and Korda put together an unbelievable round of 63 to vault her into the lead. She was excellent from tee to green and her putter was fantastic. The 63 included a second-nine 29, and Korda rolled in six straight birdies to finish her round. That momentum carried into her Saturday round when she birdied her first two holes.
On Sunday, Korda took advantage of the Par 5s, nearly holing out from the fairway on the fifth hole for a tap-in eagle. On 12, Korda took an aggressive line that led to another eagle. After building a five stroke lead, Korda approached the 15th and made things interesting, putting a ball in the water on the long Par 3.
It was how Korda responded that showed her resilience and mental toughness. Instead of playing it safe to the center of the green, Korda got aggressive and went for the tucked front right location near the water, and it nearly paid off. That shot was one of the gutsiest ones of the tournament, and a strong finish carried her to a major victory.
