America’s Independence Day came and went with literal tons of fireworks igniting across all 50 states.

Picking Si Woo Kim on a given week can feel like playing with fire. The 26-year-old has three PGA Tour wins, including a runaway Players Championship title in 2016. Not to mention in 2021 at The American Express.

When he’s on, Kim can hang with anyone. When he’s off, the temper builds and missed cuts are a regular occurrence.

Talent-wise, Kim is right up there this week. He’s even beginning to play more steady golf of late.

He’s got top-10s at the Players and the Memorial Tournament, as well as T-12th at the Masters.

Kim missed three of his next four cuts after his win, but has just two (and a withdrawal) since February.

Kim’s set to make his third start at the John Deere Classic. He missed the cut in 2013 shortly after turning 18. In his fourth ever PGA Tour start, he shot 69 in round two but was done in by an opening 74.

Another poor start (73) outweighed another under-par second round (70) when he MC’d again in 2018.

Kim and fellow South Korean Sungjae Im are forgoing next week’s Open Championship to prepare for the Olympics the following week.

If either wins an Olympic medal, he will be relieved of the country’s two-year military requirement that will be coming for them soon. Winning a major championship is another way to skirt the requirement, but finishing top-three in a limited field Olympics is more attainable than taking the trophy against double the field size and talent pool at the Open.

I say all that to point to the fact that Kim should be trying to peak in his last Tokyo tune-up. He likes to be aggressive with the driver, though that can get him in trouble at TPC Deere Run.

If Kim can execute a good game plan and be aggressive with his irons instead, he can go crazy low. Plus, he’s 24th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained around the green (.334).
