Kevin Streelman gets about as close to a home game as he can get with this week’s John Deere Classic. The Wheaton, Illinois, native is teeing it up in his state’s annual PGA Tour event for the ninth time.

“It’s obviously great to get here, and it’s only two hours from where I grew up,” Streelman was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2013. “Great fan base and friends and family are all here.”

Streelman has made five cuts at TPC Deere Run. Three ended in top-10s, including T-7th (66-71-66-65) in his last appearance in 2018.

The 42-year-old arrives to the Quad Cities playing some of the best golf of his life. Prior to a surprising missed cut in his last start two weeks ago at the Travelers Championship, Streels reeled off six straight top-26 finishes. That included T-8th at the PGA Championship and T-15th at the U.S. Open.

Not only did he show some mettle in the majors, but he did it at big ballparks. Reigning it back in to a shorter layout this week only helps his cause.

The former Duke Blue Devil ranks 45th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee (.287), an impressive mark for someone outside the top 100 in driving distance.

He’s also 33rd in SG approach (.483) and 25th in greens in regulation (68.52%).

Streelman’s wedge game is also a good course fit. He’s fifth in proximity from 75-100 yards (13’2”) and ninth from 50-125 (16’5”).

There are plenty of reachable par-4s and par-5s this week. Streelman should have good birdie looks whether or not he plays these holes aggresively.

I’m already looking ahead and liking his dark horse chances to contend next week at Royal St. George’s. A win this week, however, would be far from an upset.
