Royal St. George’s is the site where Louis Oosthuizen defended his 2010 Open Championship title. The sweet-swinging South African couldn’t quite replicate his runaway victory at St. Andrew’s, but he did make the cut and finished T-54th (72-70-74-77).

It’s wild to think Oosthuizen hasn’t won another major since. The 32-year-old of course has the career runner-up grand slam with second place in all four events. This year’s close call at the U.S. Open was his second runner-up finish in that event.

This will be Oosthuizen’s 14th Open Championship start. After missing the cut in his first three, Oosthuizen has just one more MC and a withdrawal to go with a win, T-2nd and two more top-20s.

Overall in the majors, he’s made 34 of 48 cuts with two withdrawals. This year saw him take T-26th at the Masters and T-2nd at the other two.

Oosthuizen does not play a lot of events throughout the season. It seems to help him peak for the right moments.

He took two weeks off following his last appearance at the European Tour’s BMW International Open where he earned T-42nd. It was his ninth straight made cut in a stroke play event dating back to last fall. It did snap a streak of four straight top-20s.

The flat stick has been a big strength this season for the 38-year-old. Oosthuizen ranks first on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting (1.062) and is 10th in SG around the green (.417).

He’s quietly also fourth in scoring average (69.842) and fifth in proximity from 200-225 yards (35’).
