6. Scottie Scheffler. -0.94

Only four players beat the four-round field average in all four of the calendar year’s Major events. Scheffler was one of the four.

Better yet, he claimed a top 10 spot in three of the four events, and as top 20 in all four. His only weakness was an inability to elevate any of those finishes to top-five true-contender status.

Scheffler’s Major season began with a tie for 18th at the Masters. It was his worst major showing of the season. He tied for eighth, five behind Mickelson, at the PGA, for seventh, five behind Rahm, at the U.S. Open and for eighth again at the Brit.

His scores:

Masters               -0.36

PGA                       -1.06

U.S. Open           -1.19

British Open       -1.16

Average               -0.94

5. Hideki Matsuyama, -1.09

Covid kept Matsuyama out of the British Open, limiting him to just three Major starts. He converted the first into a Green Jacket, becoming the first Asian male ever to win a Major event.

He followed that victory with a tie for 23rd at the PGA and for 26th at the U.S. Open. So his overall fifth place standing was almost entirely a product of his Masters win. Matsuyama’s scores:

Masters               -2.32

PGA                       -0.59

U.S. Open            -0.35

British Open        DNP

Average               -1.09
