2021 3M Open: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Twin Cities
Tony Finau is gunning for his third fat paycheck in as many tries at the 3M Open.
He debuted at TPC Twin Cities in 2019 along with the rest of the PGA Tour and fired four rounds in the 60s (66-68-69-68) en route to T-23rd. Finau had one of his better chances to snap a now five-year PGA Tour drought in Blaine in 2020.
The Utahan again was sub-70 all four days (65-66-69-68) and finished three shots out of a playoff in a tie for third.
Finau is a top-tier ball-striker and appreciates knowing how his ball will react from the greens. Not to say he can’t play the ground game if he needs to, as evidenced by T-15th last week at The Open.
“The greens are just the right moisture where they’re not going to spin a lot or bounce over,” Finau said in 2020 of TPC Twin Cities in a Tee Scripts transcription, “so you’re kind of just hitting your number and the ball’s staying around that position.”
Finau was a frequent flyer up on leaderboard on the West Coast swing this year when Finau reeled off four straight top-fives. He’s since added five more top-30s, including two top-10s at the majors.
The 31-year-old’s top strokes gained stat this season may surprise you. Finau is seventh on the PGA Tour in SG around the green. (.439) He’s also 10th in SG tee to green (1.294).
Finau led the field last year in SG approach (2.426) and tied for fourth in greens in regulation (83.33%).
It just takes a hot putting week to complete the puzzle. That’s easier said than done.
Until this week!
I’m going out on theflimsiest of limbs to proclaim Finau the champion. Put that on a Post-It Note.
