Cam Davis may be playing with a little fire in his belly this week. The promising young Australian was poised to enter The Open field last week as an alternate. Unfortunately, that plan was halted due to laws regarding his process of acquiring a green card that keeps him in the U.S. for six months.

Davis was playing great golf and could have really made a dent at Royal St. George’s. Instead, it’s the 3M Open where he’ll aim to win his second PGA Tour event in his last three starts.

The 26-year-old broke through for his first win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic by making four birdies and a holed bunker shot for eagle in his last seven holes of regulation to sneak into a playoff.

Davis knocked out Joaquin Niemann in the first playoff hole and on the fifth hole defeated Troy Merritt to hoist the trophy.

Davis showed consistent ball striking in the playoff and all week in Detroit. He was fourth in the field in strokes gained tee to green (2.112) and is 72nd (.377) and climbing on the PGA Tour for the season.

Davis’ short game is also on the rise as he’s outside the top 100 on the season but was fifth (.804) in Detroit.

In 2020-21, Davis ranks 29th in SG off the tee (.384) and is 17th in driving distance (308.4). In holes per eagle he’s fourth (87.8) and approach proximity from 200-plus yards he’s eighth (47’6”).

He comes to Minnesota on a run of five made cuts in his last six starts, as well as eight of the last 10. This is his third 3M Open start. Davis missed the cut by one in 2019 and fired 67-66-69-68 to post T-12th where he was just five shots off the winning pace and three off of second place.
