Patrick Cantlay is right in the thick of the FedEx Cup title race. Sure, his cause was aided by racking up 600 of his 2,014 points when he won the Memorial Tournament after 54-hole six-shot leader, Jon Rahm, was forced to withdraw due to a positive COVID-19 test.

Nonetheless, the points still count the same for Cantlay who can climb back up to No. 1 in the standings with a good showing in Memphis.

The Caifornian is making his third appearance at TPC Southwind. Cantlay fired three rounds in the 60s, including an opening 65, to post T-12th in his debut in 2019.

A pair of opening rounds in the 70s took Cantlay out of contention, but rounds of 65-67 on the weekend lifted him to T-35th in 2020.

Cantlay has rest on his side this week as his last competitive reps came in a rare missed cut at The Open. It snapped a streak of four straight top-25s that included the win at Muirfield Village.

The former top amateur at UCLA had a great West Coast swing with a solo second at The American Express, T-3rd at Pebble Beach and T-15th at Riviera.

Cantlay has an admirable statistical profile this season.

The 29-year-old is fourth in strokes gained tee to green (1.505), as well as eighth in SG around the green (.418).

Executing shots out of the rough is important at TPC Southwind. Cantlay is a respectable 47th in proximity from the rough (43’3”), a better mark than a lot of the big names in the field.

If conditions are benign as forecasted, Cantlay can go low. He’s 24th in par breakers (23.3%).
