2021 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Southwind
The Jordan Spieth revival tour would have truly been complete with a major championship. He couldn’t win one of the big four tournaments, but winning his first FedEx Cup title next month would make for a good consolation prize.
Thanks to a win at the Valero Texas Open, two runner-ups and six other top-10s, Spieth is in second place in the FedEx Cup standings and breathing down Collin Morikawa’s back just 64 points behind.
One of Spieth’s aforementioned runner-ups came in his last start at The Open. His comeback bid on Sunday was staved off by Morikawa. Taking the last couple weeks off since Royal St. George’s could give Spieth a boost over Morikawa and those who competed in last week’s Olympics in Japan.
The WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational is a no-cut event, but it goes to show the roll Spieth is on by pointing out his streak of 14 makes in a row going back to January.
The former Texas Longhorn sits 11th on the PGA Tour this season in total strokes gained (1.45). It’s still a bit of an adventure for him off the tee, but there is room for creative players to shine at TPC Southwind as long as they avoid the water.
Spieth is 20th in SG approach (.594) and has a short game amateurs and pros alike would kill for. The 28-year-old is seventh in SG around the green (.428) and 42nd in sandsaves (55.56%) to help traverse TPC Southwind’s myriad bunkers.
This is his third trip to Memphis, all coming since the event evolved into the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. A pair of 70s kept him from contending in 2019, though 66-68 on the weekend vaulted him to T-12th.
Spieth’s game still hadn’t turned the corner at this time in 2020. He still fought to post three rounds in the 60s to take T-30th.
His game is almost as sharp as it was when Spieth was world No. 1 in 2017. That vintage form we’re seeing will lift him to a career best finish in the Volunteer State.
