2021 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Southwind
Daniel Berger is as consistent a player as they come. With that said, the PGA Tour stop in Memphis has disproportionately boosted his career more than any other.
The former Florida State Seminole burst onto the scene in 2016 when a win at the FedEx St. Jude Classic helped Berger to PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors. Berger fired 67-64-69-67 to hold off former teammate Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson and Steve Stricker by three shots.
Berger went back-to-back in 2018 thanks to rounds of 70-68-66-66 that lifted him by Meenwhee Kim and Charl Schwartzel by one.
Berger wasn’t able to complete the three-peat, missing the cut all together when his game took a turn due to injuries and poor form in 2018.
He didn’t qualify to come to Memphis in 2019 when the event switched over to the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Berger made the most of his invite in 2020 when his game was at an all-time high.
He battled Koepka and Mickelson once again, tying those two and Tom Lewis in a tie for second and three shots back of champion Justin Thomas.
“If you’re in the fairway you can attack some flags,” Berger assessed TPC Southwind in 2016 as transcribed by ASAP Sports. “It’s not an overly long course. Pretty firm and fast. I hit it in the fairway all day and hit some nice shots in there.”
Berger is a winner in 2021 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He’s missed just two cuts this year and is on a streak of seven makes in a row.
Five of those were top-20s, including two top-10s at the U.S. Open and The Open.
The 28-year-old last competed three weeks ago at Royal St. George’s, so he should be well rested for the home stretch of the 2020-21 season.
Berger ranks 14th on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (1.295) and SG approach (.693). He’s up to ninth in approaches from 150-175 yards (24’8”) and seventh from 175-200 (30’6”).
