It’s not always easy competing on a Donald Ross course for the first time. His trademarked sloped greens and tree-lined routings still hold up today.

So, tip of the cap for Matthew Wolff posting T-19th in his Wyndham Championship debut in 2019. The then PGA Tour rookie recorded 65-67-67-67 and had his irons dialed in to finish sixth in the field in strokes gained approach (1.39).

You can give Wolff another tip of the cap for a T-17th last week at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. It’s far down on the list of his career achievements, but it’s a step in the right direction for a player who’s been open about his battles with mental health that have led to time away from the golf course and a dip in performance when he is out there.

In years past, this might have brought a dark cloud over him or brought into play questions about his competitiveness from golf talking heads. Now, he’s seemed to only gain more fans for his openness and endearing personality that Wolff has on good days and bad.

The former Oklahoma State standout notched his second top-20 in five starts, the other coming at the U.S. Open.

Wolff can still salvage his year with good form this week and in the playoffs. A pair of runner-up finishes early in the 2020-21 PGA Tour season, including at the 2020 U.S. Open, has him in position to make a move.

Wolff ranks 41st in SG approach (.42) and first in holes per eagle (83.5).
