Harris English was in position for his third win of the 2020-21 PGA Tour season in his last start at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. The best season of his career was about to get a cherry on top, but a poor back nine at TPC Southwind and a pace of play warning due to a playing partner as slow as molasses in Bryson DeChambeau were enough to derail English’s chances.

The former Georgia Bulldog settled for solo fourth, which is still good for his third top-five in the last four starts. He posted a season-low 62 in round one.

English is a strong contender for a spot on the American Ryder Cup team. Wins at the Tournament of Champions and Travelers Championship highlight a 2021 that features seven top-25s and only one missed cut since February.

A strong FedEx Cup Playoffs showing will either earn him an automatic Ryder Cup bid, or at least persuade captain Steve Stricker for a pick.

English is at Liberty National for the second time. He missed the cut by just one at the 2013 The Barclays with rounds of 72-71.

The 32-year-old ranks 26th on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (1.135) led by 13th in SG putting (.559). If conditions for The Northern Trust are as benign as they appear, English is plenty capable of going low at seventh in birdie average (4.34).

He’ll look to take advantage of the par-5s. English is fifth in par-5 scoring (4.49).

English has the game to compete on any type of layout. Expect his second trip to Liberty National to go better than the first.
