2021 BMW Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Caves Valley
Watching Jordan Spieth on a given week is a roller coaster ride. The ride he took us on at The Northern Trust had extra G force.
Spieth was in danger of missing the cut after an opening 1-over 72. No fear! He showed off in front of Lady Liberty by matching the then-course record 62 on Friday to climb into contention.
Of course, we all know that co-course record crumbled a day later when Cameron Smith posted 60.
Spieth’s 62 was just as thrilling as Smith’s low round, if not more so. Two-hole outs and back-to-back eagles had the fans on their feet often.
Of course, another 72 the next day took him out of the running. Back-to-back triple bogeys on Sunday produced an anomalous 79 and 73rd finish on the leaderboard.
The weird Monday finish without fans might have taken the wind out of Spieth’s sails. With a FedEx Cup title still in grasp and a fresh slate at the BMW Championship, expect his resilience to be on full display.
Spieth has been on a tear all of 2021. It started with a pair of top-fives on the West Coast swing and T-4th at Bay Hill. It crested with his first win since 2017 at the Valero Texas Open and continued with a pair of runner-ups this summer, including at The Open.
The Texan ranks top 30 on the PGA Tour in strokes gained approach and putting and top-10 in SG around the green. Get the driver to cooperate, and he’s tough to beat.
Caves Valley is a new course to most of the field this week. Not to Spieth.
As an Under Armour endorser, he’s been in the Baltimore area often at the company’s headquarters. Those trips have resulted in some rounds at Caves Valley.
"“We typically try and make at least a trip to play one or two rounds out of Caves, so I’d say I played it close to 10 times now,” Spieth was quoted by Baltimore Business Journal. “I just love going out there for the entire experience.”"
