FedEx Cup Playoffs: Who’s In and Who’s Out?
By DJ Cadden
An eventful FedEx Cup Playoffs week at Liberty National saw several players extend their playoff runs, while other players saw their season end abruptly.
A handful of big names just missed the 70-player cutoff for next weekend’s BMW Championship following strong performances from unexpected players. This article will take a look at every golfer that hopped into the top-70 and who had their season end.
Who’s In?
Alex Noren – Noren had one of the strongest performances of the weekend, evident by his fourth-place finish. The Sweden native jumped from No. 91 to No. 43 in the FedEx Cup standings.
Erik Van Rooyen – Rooyen, who won his first event just two weeks ago, was a member of the final threesome on Monday. Despite shooting a 1-over par 72 during the final round, Van Rooyen jumped 31 spots to No. 45 in the FedEx Cup standings.
Tom Hoge – Hoge saw by far the biggest jump this week, gaining a total of 60 spots to finish at No. 48 in the FedEx Cup standings. The 32-year old has not won a professional event since a 2011 win on the Canadian Tour.
Harold Varner III – For a while, it looked like Varner may contend for the win at The Northern Trust on Thursday and Friday. Even though he fell off over the weekend, Varner still squeaked into the BMW Championship.
Keith Mitchell – Mitchell’s fate was not decided until hole No. 72 on Monday. A birdie-birdie-birdie finish was enough for Mitchell to secure his spot next week.
Who’s Out
Matthew Wolff – After such a tumultuous season, it may have been a shock to many that Wolff entered the playoffs within the top-70. However, after shooting 8-over par through the first two rounds, the youngster was the first golfer out of the BMW Championship.
Matt Fitzpatrick – After missing the cut by two strokes following three bogeys on Friday’s back nine, the fate of Fitzpatrick’s season was out of his hands. The Englishman slipped 13 spots from No. 59 to No. 72 in the FedEx Cup standings.
Tyrell Hatton – Perhaps the biggest name to miss the BMW Championship, Hatton could simply not get anything rolling in New Jersey. Consecutive rounds of 72 saw the No. 13 golfer in the world slip outside the top-70 cutline.
Martin Laird – Missing the cut by just one stroke, Laird saw his season cut short. The missed cut caused the Scot to fall outside the top-70 in the FedEx Cup standings.
Troy Merritt – Following a rollercoaster season, Merritt saw his year come to an end in New Jersey. While Merritt accumulated four top-10 finishes this season, his 14 missed cuts haunted him throughout the year.
