2021 Tour Championship: Top 10 power rankings at East Lake
Jordan Spieth was certainly the main story on the PGA Tour early in 2021. His slew of high finishes on the West Coast swing paved the way for his four-year win drought to end in his home state at the Valero Texas Open.
Spieth continued to play solid golf since, but has not won another event and has ceded a large share of the spotlight to others in the game.
He can remind us he’s a needle mover by playing well at an event and venue that’s been conducive to his success.
Spieth qualified for his sixth Tour Championship and first since 2017.
He won the whole enchilada in 2015, taking both the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup. Spieth fired 68-66-68-69 to smoke three players tied for second place by four shots.
Spieth also posted T-2nd in his tournament debut in 2013 and was T-7th in 2017.
The former Texas Longhorn is back to his uber-consistent ways with 11 top-35s in his last 12 starts. That span includes his win and runner-up finishes at Colonial and The Open.
Spieth has six shots to make up on Cantlay. It seems daunting, but Spieth’s record at East Lake stands up about as well as any in the top 10 to start the week.
The 28-year-old has the short game to stand up to Donald Ross greens. Spieth is sixth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained around the green (.424) and 30th in SG putting (.418).
Spieth has a way of thrilling us with birdie binges. He’s 11th in birdie average (4.3).
