FedEx Cup Playoffs: Who’s In and Who’s Out?

After an eventful week at Caves Valley, just two golfers snuck their way into the top-30 of the FedEx Cup playoffs and advanced to the TOUR Championship.

This article will take a look at both golfers that moved inside the top-30 and who had their season ended in Maryland.

Who’s In?

Erik Van Rooyen – Perhaps the biggest winner of the FedEx Cup Playoffs so far, Van Rooyen has skyrocketed from outside the top-100 to No. 27 in the FedEx Cup points standings. A seventh place finish at The Northern Trust put the South African in prime position to fight for a TOUR Championship spot. Van Rooyen capitalized and left the BMW Championship with a fifth place finish, his second best result of the season.

Sergio Garcia – Before last week’s event, Garcia had not recorded a top-15 since March of this season. After a missed cut at The Northern Trust, Garcia’s slump had hit a familiar low. All of the Spaniard’s luck turned around at Caves Valley as Garcia fought his way to a solo fifth place finish. The impressive performance was enough for the veteran to sneak to No. 28 in the FedEx Cup standings.

Who’s Out?

Charley Hoffman – Despite racking up 14 top-25 finishes, Hoffman was one of the most unpredictable golfers on tour this season. A total of 25 made cuts allowed Hoffman to rack up enough points to stay within the top-30 for the majority of the year. However, two finishes outside the top-20 in the playoffs proved to be Hoffman’s demise.

Max Homa – Homa was arguably the streakiest golfer on the PGA Tour this season and was simply on a cold streak entering the playoffs. Homa, a first-time winner this season, has recorded just one top-20 finish since May. Finishes of 47th and 63rd in the FedEx Cup playoffs caused the youngster’s season to come to an early end.
