Webb Simpson is making his third appearance at Silverado. He missed the cut in 2016 but had a nice showing a year later with T-17th (69-70-70-72).

Per usual, Simpson brings in steady form into the week. He’s made his last three cuts and, counting no-cut events, has five top-50s and four top-20s in his last five starts.

Simpson has four top-10s in 2021 and would love to close the year with his first win.

The American was one of a handful of guys who may feel snubbed to not receive a captain’s pick. Simpson doesn’t seem like the type to let that bother him, but it still may fuel him to want to play well this week.

You never know, if Brooks Koepka can’t give it a go at Whistling Straits, Simpson could still be summoned.

The 36-year-old’s strokes gained numbers last season on the PGA Tour were solid across the board. His high-water mark was 10th in strokes gained around the green (.353), but he was top-100 everywhere else and top-40 everywhere besides off the tee.

Simpson is still accurate with the driver (26th in fairways, 67.08%). He’s just not a very long hitter, but that can be worked around at Silverado.

It usually takes about 15-under-par or better to win the Fortinet Championship. Simpson was 10th in scoring average (69.901) and eighth in birdie average (4.34).

He recently contended in one of his favorite events, the Wyndham Championship, where he earned T-7th. I see Simpson hopping back in the mix this week.
