Bryson DeChambeau’s Ryder Cup passion makes him insanely more likable
With the Ryder Cup already halfway over, one of the biggest takeaways from this week is how likable Bryson DeChambeau has gotten. His passion for the event and being on Team USA shines through, and even though DeChambeau is different, embracing the Ryder Cup like he is doing makes a big difference.
Those who know me are probably shocked I even wrote this story, but after the debacle with Brooks Koepka before the Ryder Cup and seeing how DeChambeau has embraced it has made me evolve my opinion of him.
I’m not saying DeChambeau is one of my top players on Tour, but with it being Ryder Cup week, I’ll root for him to beat the Europeans all week long. DeChambeau earned a lot of respect from me this week with his playing and passion.
He gets what it means to be on this team and represent his country. I think DeChambeau understands the assignment like Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia have throughout the last few Ryder Cups. His energy is crucial to team events, and I’ll give him credit for what he is doing.
Not to mention, the 417-yard drive in the afternoon session on Friday was absolutely incredible. He and Scottie Scheffler earned a half-point against Jon Rahm, and Tyrell Hatton was a big step for both of them. To be honest, I don’t think I’ve seen DeChambeau smile this much in a long time, and he needs it.
While he isn’t my favorite guy on Tour, and I think golf is just fine without bombing it 400-plus yards, I’ll give him a lot of respect for how he is carrying himself this week.
The Ryder Cup week should have the stat strokes gained passion because it’s something that matters. Koepka is embarrassing himself because he refuses to get into the Ryder Cup atmosphere, while DeChambeau is firing up the crowd, playing into it and loving every second of it.
After the crap he has dealt with this year, and yes, most of it was self-induced, DeChambeau deserves to have a good week where people embrace him. After he was waving his driver around like a sword on Friday, I knew my opinion would change.
DeChambeau is having a blast, and that is what this week is about, along with defeating Team Europe no matter what it takes. Hopefully, he will finish the week out strong because if he does, everyone will want him in Italy in 2023.
Team USA has a different flavor to it this year with Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, DeChambeau, and Daniel Berger buying into it, which tells me the Americans could be on track to have a dominant run. They all understand what it means to be on this team and embrace how fun the Ryder Cup week is and how important it is for growing golf.
