The 2021-22 PGA Tour season is onto its second event, the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Things got underway a couple weeks ago at the Fortinet Championship in Napa, California. We now go cross country to Jackson, Mississippi, where Country Club of Jackson hosts the Sanderson Farms Championship.

The event dates back to 1968 and has been at Country Club of Jackson since 2014.

The tournament came to this venue on its 100th year anniversary. CCJ has 27 holes on property with holes from the Dogwood and Azalea courses comprising the 18 used for the tournament.

John Fought redesigned these holes for the composite course in 2008. They measure 7,400 yards for a par-72. There is a good variety of medium to long par-4s and par-5s where bashers can gain ground, though length isn’t a requisite to win here. Just ask recent past champs like Ryan Armour or Peter Malnati.

Putting surfaces are Bermuda grass. This is a common sight throughout the southeastern U.S.

Winning score has fallen between 15- and 21-under-par.

There is a field of 144 players competing to make the standard 36-hole cut of top 65 and ties.

The Sanderson Farms Championship generally attracts weak fields given its spot on the schedule. A lot of big names are still decompressing from the FedEx Cup Playoffs and/or the Ryder Cup.

Some will return next week in Las Vegas or later in October at some guaranteed-money events.

There are no players in the top 20 present in the Official World Golf Rankings. There is a swath of guys in the top 50 in the world to at least make this competitive, including defending champion and recent Ryder Cup performer, Sergio Garcia.

The weather forecast looks like it could be rainy into Thursday before clearing up the rest of the weekend. Temperatures will be in the 60s-80s with some humidity and light wind.

There’s a big ol’ chicken trophy waiting to be awarded from the fine poultry purveyors at Sanderson Farms. Let’s dive into 10 players who expect to contend:
