Matthew Wolff’s recent results don’t jump off the page, but if you’re keeping tabs on him you know he’s not far off. Most weeks of late, it seems as if he fires two or three solid rounds, only to be rebuffed by one bad score.

A prime example is at the U.S. Open where he opened in 70-68 to get in contention at Torrey Pines. Wolff closed in 73-74 to fall to T-15th.

Nonetheless, it was still highly encouraging given he took the previous nine weeks off due to mental health reasons. Wolff made three of his next four cuts after the U.S. Open and also finished T-17th against a strong field at the no-cut WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

Wolff’s time away hampered his standing in the FedEx Cup. He was unable to make it past the first round of the playoffs, but perhaps a little more time off will do him well.

I was surprised to see Wolff pass up playing the Fortinet Championship in his home state of California. With that said, the wide fairways and bevy of birdie opportunities at the Sanderson Farms Championship are more suitable to his game.

The 22-year-old ranked fourth on the PGA Tour last season in driving distance (315.9). His homemade swing produces an average club head speed of 123.71 miles per hour that ranked sixth. Wolff was also fourth in holes per eagle (90).

A competitive guy like Wolff might have been watching the Ryder Cup last week thinking he could have been a useful part of the team. He was far from a snub, but I think a lot of us would have pegged him for the roster after his breakout 2019 rookie season.

I like Wolff to show off that talent and break into the top 10 this week.
