Hideki Matsuyama is at the Shriners Children’s Open for the fourth time. He’s had fairly good success at TPC Summerlin. The Japanese star debuted in 2014 with a T-10th (66-71-68-66) finish, added a T-16th (68-67-68-65) in 2019 and despite rounds of 68 and 69 did not make the cut in 2020.

Matsuyama’s been in the 60s in nine of 10 rounds with a 71 the lone outlier.

In 2019, he was eighth in the field in strokes gained tee to green (7.997) and T-18th in greens in regulation (81.94%).

The 29-year-old got off to a good start to the 2021-22 PGA Tour season by taking T-6th at the first event, the Fortinet Championship.

He was third in the field in Napa in SG tee to green (10.129 total).

That was his fourth top-10 of 2021, as well as the least flashy. That’ll be the case when the other three came in a Masters win, just missing out on the podium at the Olympics and finishing runner-up at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

Matsuyama ranked 15th last season in SG tee to green (1.074) and gained strokes in all categories except for putting. Strong approach play is an asset around TPC Summerlin. Matsuayama’s got it, ranking in the top 25 in proximity from 125-150 yards, 150-175 and 175-200.

Matsuyama is committed to playing the Zozo Championship later this fall in his home country. He already expects to get a hero’s welcome, but a win at the Shriners would give his adoring fans even more to cheer about.
